There is indeed death and decay, just as there is a nod to former glories and a hint of the "strange fruit" of Southern trees (Billie Halliday). But Walcott is too concerned with teasing out what West Indians can make of being modern/invented to glorify or vilify either our African/Indian/Indigenous ancestors or our European ancestors. /I'll give you a hint of our quandary; neither the lime tree nor the eucalyptus is "native" to the Caribbean but both now grow here and both are used here. Walcott is interested, among other things with the question, 'is there something beyond the binary non/european?'. Please read the poem carefully. Derek Walcott, the poet, was born in St. Lucia. The pains and destruction of colonization experienced in the Caribbean Islands were similar to what the African continent experienced.

Great work.Toyinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14723058687306863407noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593606930905143528.post-32729464568696188032014-06-30T21:44:16.280+05:302014-06-30T21:44:16.280+05:30Great workGreat workAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593606930905143528.post-17170151107020047672013-11-03T13:56:24.571+05:302013-11-03T13:56:24.571+05:30Does the poem state that the Great House is in Afr...Does the poem state that the Great House is in Africa? The colonial "empire" is alluded to having created the destruction which has left the Great House pilfered. However, the tools for empire expansion- "Bible and...sword", have been used to colonise the colonisers of Africa. For example, England has been colonised by the sword and with the aid of discursive narratives' truths. Rather than Africa, the Great House may be any land whose people, "girls" and landscape, "trees", have suffered.clover.4https://www.blogger.com/profile/16841272129416302528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593606930905143528.post-9025887862030397802013-08-23T19:29:46.858+05:302013-08-23T19:29:46.858+05:30feeling of colonized peoples express by this poem ...feeling of colonized peoples express by this poem Padmapriya Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06661900635128638353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593606930905143528.post-87508791058058249762013-08-23T19:25:03.503+05:302013-08-23T19:25:03.503+05:30great patriot expressed his feeling to the worldgreat patriot expressed his feeling to the worldPadmapriya Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06661900635128638353noreply@blogger.com
