"In fact, our handwriting reflects and reveals a lot about us..." ❤️

On Handwriting! ❤️

Reflections 😊

This article takes its cue and inspiration from Christy Boban’s insightful article on ‘Significance of Owning a Good Handwriting’, in her awesome blog, HERE.

Her blog is titled, Thoughts by Christy.

One particular paragraph in the post was even more appealing. I quote –

It has been scientifically proven that the people with good handwriting have a better personality. They can accurately judge people. They have a positive approach towards life. They also have a bigger ambition. They will be cleanly in their being and will be ordered in each phase of life.

Well, I wish to attest to every word that Christy has mentioned in this paragraph.

Indeed, one’s handwriting is a cue and a clue to analysing their character, say graphologists.

A good handwriting, sans over-writing, is indeed a visual treat to the reader.

And it takes a bit more of a conscious effort to cultivate a good handwriting style.

I have personally seen students improving greatly on their handwriting, in quite a short period of time, say, a month’s time.

Students were asked to buy one quire of unruled paper, and after their classes we used to sit with them in their respective classrooms, during the post-lunch session, and give them handwriting practice. I’ve seen many students improving greatly on their confidence levels after having improved their handwriting.

A good handwriting is indeed a great asset for a learner. It comes by easy practice.

Christy goes on to suggest that -

… we can improve their writing through activities. Make them write slowly, help them to identify the weak areas, make them write in ruled papers, ask them to watch calligraphy videos, make activities like writing letters. Shaping a good handwriting from a child is a step in building his personality.

indeed, watching calligraphy videos and trying to follow them in the handwriting notebook also helps a lot.

In the past, writing letters was a great motivation to improve one’s handwriting.

That’s because, writing a note or a letter to a beloved friend, involves making a conscious effort to giving them our best presentation – which manifested itself in the handwriting!

Be it a cute note that attaches itself with a gift, or a letter to commemorate one’s birthday, or a letter to a pen friend, writing a letter writing helped greatly in enhancing one’s handwriting skills.

In this post, me thought of sharing a lovely letter from a pen pal way back in the 1990s, when writing letters was our only mode of communication with friends from across the world.

In this particular Inland letter, that dates to almost thirty years ago, I found my pen pal’s [Dev] style so lovely! I was so fascinated with his handwriting that I wanted to cherish it for posterity!

I just want you to observe, to admire and to appreciate his ‘r’ & ‘g’ & ‘y’ & the circled words in red, as well. 😊

Cute, na? 😊

You see, it took days and sometimes even weeks to get our message across. But it was really worth the effort!

By the way, for Gen Z, 😊 a pen friend or a pen pal, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is –

someone who you write friendly letters to regularly, but you have never met!

Pen friends gave us those high-octane motivation by encouraging us to pursue our hobbies passionately.

And yes! pen friends usually found common interests between them, like – reading books, watching football, learning languages, playing cricket, playing chess, indulging oneself in gardening, collecting stamps, etc. – to name a few, before they ventured to write those beautiful, calligraphic snail mails to their pen pals.

In fact, our handwriting reflects and reveals a lot about us – our character and our temperament!

Hence the pre-eminent role of graphology in forensic investigation! In case you wish to have your handwriting analysed for free, you may send it across to me. *Conditions apply. 😊

According to the website Legal Desire,

Forensic investigators use graphology to determine the personality traits of an individual.

To do so, forensic experts have to study and analyse a large number of handwriting samples, control samples, unknown and suspected samples to frame an opinion.

Handwriting reveals a person’s emotional status while writing.

Graphologists use different tools such as magnifying lens to observe the handwriting and specific features.

Manual/ Physical analysis involves the study of various handwriting features such a slant, margins, word spacing, connections, pen pressure, line spacing, movements, formations, ‘i’ dots, t bars etc.

Each feature has a specific meaning and helps to identify personality traits.

Gives us much more reasons to hone our handwriting skills each day.

Writing a diary helps in honing in on our handwriting skills to a great extent. If possible, you can even try writing a letter to your friend.

My bosom buddy, Wesley, who is teaching in a Govt Hr. Secondary School, in Erode, shared with me, this very interesting activity that he’s been doing in his classes for years now.

He said that, he used to buy inland letters from the nearest post office in large numbers, give them to his students, and ask them to write letters to their parents or relatives or friends, using the given rubrics.

The students found this activity so exciting, and the parents were overjoyed as well, to see a letter from their kids, which subsequently took them back down nostalgic lane, to their own snail mail days, he added!

So yes! Take a quire of paper, have a good ball-pen on you, and start writing whatever comes to your mind, dictated by your heart!

Happy honing in on your hand-writing skills!
