Her passion for books was a reason...

I comprehend Jane Eyre to be a very lonely girl who has got many emotions suppressed within herself. She doesn’t seem to be friendly that easily because she got used to her solitude right from the childhood. She is much passionate towards the books. I reckon, that passion for
books made her to start the conversation with a girl who is a stranger. The title of the book “Rasselas” in the hand of the girl has attracted her, though she felt strange the attraction made her to take the effort to start the conversation. The quoted lines, make me feel that she isn’t friendly, only the book (attraction) made her talk. Pg.53 ‘I hardly know where I found the hardihood thus to open a conversation with a stranger; the step was contrary to my nature and habits.

The above lines mean that she doesn’t actually love socialising and she is not gregarious by nature according to my point of view. She is lonely, but the attraction for the title ‘Rasselas’ and the passion for books made her start the conversation with a girl who is a stranger.
