The Chennai Book Fair is getting better and better, by the
year, going by present indications. The YMCA Grounds that played host to the
Fair this year, was a lot more effective in crowd management and parking
management. Unlike last year, when volunteers from BAPSI controlled the parking
lots using their own volunteers, this year saw the traffic constables and SIs doing
a really commendable job in traffic management and parking management. They
facilitated neat parking of cars and bikes.
Cleanliness and hygiene were given extra priority over the
previous years. One could see volunteers picking up waste papers and promptly
putting them in garbage cans, which were conveniently located. There was also
ample space for families to sit in the grassy meadows that welcomed visitors to
the pandal. Events that showcase Indian culture,
Literature and films were organised simultaneously for those who wished to
spend that extra time at the Book Fair. Ashokamitran was one among the first
dignitaries who made it to the Fair. Director Ram was at the fair on the second
day, and although there was some commotion when his father got lost in the crowd, it
took just a little time for the organisers to call out through the Public
Address System, to reach out to him.
This year also, the vernacular got added attention. One
could see scores of book stalls displaying abundant resources in Tamil,
followed by book stalls in Telugu and Malayalam. Bhakthi literature had its own
share of votaries too.
Stalls by reputed publishing houses showcased their best for
the visitors. British Council, as usual, came up with their membership drive offer,
which also attracted many academics.
