Meet the Rock Agamas of India | Key Indicators of a Region's Environmental Health 💚

Meet the ‘Ectothermic’ Peninsular Rock Agama

#intothewildwithrufus

[Not the Spider-Man Agama!]

Well, we spotted this striking species of lizard in Pench, Madhya Pradesh.

They are called Peninsular Rock Agamas, - and they are fascinating examples of adaptation to a specific habitat.

They are ectothermic, as they rely on external sources to regulate their body temperature. Hence, they can be seen basking in sunny spots on rocks to warm themselves.

Their presence can be a vital indicator of the environmental health of a particular region, especially regarding urban warming!

At first glance, the rock agama that I spotted, looked like a mini-version of a ‘Spider-Man in action’, 😊 and so I looked up for more on this striking species of lizard.

In fact, there seems to be a species called the Spider-Man agama but they are not native to India. They are native to Tanzania.

However, the peninsular rock agamas are native to Peninsular India, and they are found commonly on rocky hills in Southern India, including states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh.

But wait… we saw this in Madhya Pradesh. That means, MP is warming up folks! 😊
