Meet the Indian Roller | The Blue Jay | Neelakandan
#intothewildwithrufus
This is the Indian Roller, rightfully called so, as it is known for its aerobatic displays.
The spirited “rolling” during its flight, with twists, turns, dives, and somersaults has helped the Indian Roller – this lovely blue bird – get its name.
The Indian Roller holds significant cultural and religious importance in India. It is often called “Neelkanth” (blue throat), a name associated with Lord Shiva.
The bird is considered a symbol of good luck and prosperity, and its sighting is often seen as auspicious.
It is said that Lord Rama spotted a Neelkanth bird before setting out to defeat the demon king Ravana. This was interpreted as a divine omen of victory, further solidifying the bird’s association with triumph and good fortune.
Interestingly, the Indian
Roller is also the state bird of Odisha, Karnataka, and Telangana.
In India, the blue jay is a popular nickname for the Indian Roller, although the Blue jay is an entirely different species native to North America.
