Mr. Hopeland Ponniah speaks on "The World of Snakes"

Note: The talk will feature two live specimens of snake, Coelognathus helena (local name - Micro paambu, Trinket snake) and Ptyas mucosus (local name - Sarai paambu, rat snake). Along with the demonstration of the specimens, there will be slides of the work done by Mr. Ponniah over the years. Mr. Hopeland will talk about snakes and also clear misconceptions associated with snakes and their lives. In addition to Mr. Hopeland's talk, there will be a poetry reading session and a small skit (with the snake as a theme) by the post graduate students, Dept. of English, Loyola College, Chennai.

About the Speaker: Hopeland Ponniah is a second year undergraduate student from the Department of Zoology, Madras Christian College, Chennai. He started as someone who was an animal lover with pets that were just randomly anything, then birds in general, then identifying them and then came snakes. However he is a conservationist more than an animal lover today.

10th Study Circle

This Study Circle Meet is divided into two sections 1. An Open Forum 2. Review of the Study Circle Meetings.
The Open Forum will address different topics relating to ecocriticism, ecology, environment and OSLE-India's contribution in the area of ecocriticism. Anything that needs to be clarified about the above mentioned topics are welcome.
The second session will review the previous study circles and will also invite suggestions, comments and observations about the study circles held and to be held.

Note: You are invited to be part of this idea-sharing session even if you have not attended any of the study circles. We welcome you for your ideas, comments and observations.

He is the author of four verse collections.

His interests include Mathematics, Chess, Writing verse and Tamil Poetics.

VIII Study Circle Meet of OSLE - Calling all Eco Enthusiasts...!

Speaker: Dr. Mark C. Long
Topic: John Muir and the Idea of Wilderness
About the speaker: Dr. Mark C. Long is Associate Professor of English and American Studies, and Chair of the Department of English, at Keene State College. He has been serving on the Executive Council of ASLE-US since 1996. He is the coordinator of the ASLE Mentoring Program and also the member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the journal ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment. He has several essays and books to his credit. His forthcoming writing includes a 12, 000 word essay on the poet A.R. Ammons which will appear in the volume Twentieth Century American Nature Writers: Poetry in the Dictionary of Literary Biography series.

Home Work: It will be appreciated if you could read up on John Muir, his writing and prepare some questions, when you attend the study circle. This will enable you to be familiar with the topic in discussion.

OSLE MEET..:

At 4.30 pm, had our OSLE study group meet @ the Botany Dept. Around twelve of us were there, and Prof.Dany gave a quite scholarly presentation of his school of thought, his baby, which he has christened Rhythmocentricity.

Claiming that he has divided it into two categories, one as Oiko rhythm, n the other as Bio Rhythm, he expounded on this argument thru Critical theory down the ages. Dr.Nirmal, Dr.Narasimhan, Prof.Jojon were among those present. At 6.30, i had to excuse myself for my evening classes.
