Writing – the Basis of ‘Academic Capital’

Well, this blogpost intends to address a huge pressing demand in academia - expected of academics – students and professors in the field of higher education.

And the spur behind this post is a host of advertisements in today’s English-language dailies.

I was flipping through the pages of The Hindu and The Times of India this morning, when I stumbled upon a host of advertisements that had given a call for ‘Recruitment for the Post of Assistant / Associate Professors’ in various reputed College / Universities across India.

One advertisement from Velammal Engineering College, Chennai in today’s ToI, has a Call for Recruitment of Assistant Professors in English.

And these are their expectations –

A “First Class” or equivalent at either the Bachelor’s or Master’s level with an “exemplary academic/achievement record throughout” one’s career.

Interestingly, the recruitment process places a high value on measurable research output - research and scholarly publications.

The first thing they look out for is the candidate’s publication count - a minimum of six to seven research publications in SCI journals, Scopus, or the UGC-CARE approved list of journals.

Secondly, the candidate’s research orientation, wherein prospective candidates are expected to have a strong research orientation and the ability to mentor students in academic writing and communication.

Beyond their degree certificates, the college expects certain Desired Skills and Attributes from the ideal candidate, as follows –

the candidate should have expertise in Professional Communication with proven ‘Certificates’ to back their credentials. Given the fact that it is an engineering college, there is an emphasis on Business Communication and Technical English.

This apart, the candidate should contribute to the institution through a passion for participating in Faculty Development Programs (FDPs), global conferences, and contributing to the ‘culture of innovation.’

Finally, strong technical knowledge and effective teaching abilities are assessed during the interview process, which include an assessment of the candidate’s soft skills.

PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore has also given a Call for the Post of Assistant / Associate Professors in English and in other subjects.

They have foregrounded the following skills from the ideal candidate –

Surprisingly, a lot of emphasis has been accorded to the candidate’s research and analytical Skills. Since mid-to-senior level academic roles require research leadership, the College has emphasised on the following –

A strong track record of publishing in SCOPUS, Web of Science, or UGC-CARE listed journals.

The ability to design studies, conduct independent research, and analyse both qualitative and quantitative data effectively.

The skill to draft compelling grant proposals and secure funding for departmental research initiatives.

Familiarity with online learning platforms (Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas) and developing MOOCs or digital content.

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to articulate complex ideas clearly to a diverse audience.

Adapting methods to suit heterogeneous classrooms containing students from both English and non-English medium backgrounds.

Patents are yet another requirement expected in PSG College.

SRM University, Nirma University, VIT University, have all asked for the same rubrics while posting their call for recruitments.

Well, this trend seems to foreground the one great expectation of a good academic in the realm of higher education: Writing!

Writing is indeed considered fundamental and paramount to higher education because it is considered the basis of academic capital.

Human thought is often non-linear and chaotic. Writing hence helps in organsing one’s thoughts into a coherent, logical and linear manner.

In this regard, publications are the quantifiable objective metrics used by academic institutions to measure a person’s impact.

Moreover, academic writing provides proof of ‘continuous learning’  - showing that the student or the educator is an active contributor to their field, by constantly upgrading and updating themselves.

For students, writing is the ‘laboratory’ where they cultivate the practice of becoming scholars.

One reason why, in their ‘Academic Writing’ Classes, we always exhort our students on the two essentials skills for a good academic writing – to argue and to analyse!

To argue is to prove with evidence! Academic writing teaches students that an opinion is not an argument. They must learn to find evidence, cite sources, and respond to counter-arguments - skills that are essential for any high-level career.

To analyse is to synthesise! One reason why a student’s academic writing is expected to take at least 15 to 20 different sources to defend their argument, and weave them all into a single, coherent narrative.

The ability to write clearly and convincingly is what separates a distinguished scholar from the mediocre learner!

One majorly reason why a writerly academic is in great demand in the higher echelons of academia!

Such writerly academics are - in one phrase - professionally-ready or professionally competent to meet the challenges and the demands of academia, feel the statutory academic bodies like UGC and AICTE!

In this regard, I am so happy to note that some of our students – past and present – have taken to writing and publishing consistently in the past few years. To them, writing is the basis of academic capital!

The Interesting Story of the Painted Stork

The Villagers of Vedanthangal and their Symbiotic Relationship with the Migratory Birds

Well, today we packed up quite early in the morning for our birding destination of the day – Vedanthangal – India’s oldest water bird sanctuary.

For newbies who haven’t visited Vedanthangal yet, the ideal time for birding in Vedanthangal is from November to March, more especially to observe their nesting activity.

And where pray, is Vedanthangal?

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is located in Madurantakam, Chengalpattu district in Tamil Nadu. It is roughly around 80 kms from Chennai. The Sanctuary is open from 6 am to 6 pm on all days! Interestingly, the Sanctuary does not have a weekly holiday. It is generally open all seven days a week, including Sundays and public holidays!

The Times of India in a feature article, has a very interesting story behind the creation of India’s first-ever bird sanctuary.

Here goes -

Legend has it that, way back in the year 1796, a group of soldiers decided it would be fun to go hunting for some birds. Local villagers came across this scene and it didn’t sit well with them. That’s how the petition began to protect the birds from hunting and poaching. And this is how Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary was born, the first ever bird sanctuary in India.

Now, 229 years later, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary continues to be one of the finest sanctuaries for more than 40,000 resident as well migratory birds (annually) who visit the sanctuary during their winter migration period,

says the article dated 5th July 2022.

So why is November the ideal time for their arrival?

Well, that’s because, the monsoon rains woulda filled up the Vedanthangal lake by then, which subsequently results in the lake teeming with fish, snails, and frogs – which in turn provide the much-needed high-protein diet essential for the storks to produce eggs and feed their chicks.

Yet another unique feature of the Vedanthangal lake is the presence of the famous Barringtonia (water-resistant) trees. When the lake fills up in November, these Barringtonia trees become ‘islands’ in the water.

Nesting on these submerged trees protects the eggs and chicks from land predators like cats, foxes or mongooses.

Approximately up to 40,000 birds – resident and migratory - including Painted Storks, Spot-billed Pelicans, Egrets, Darters, Cormorants, and various ducks and sandpipers, flock this lake during the November to March season.

Well, today, we had a darshan of most of the migratory and resident birds as well.

And to our sweet surprise, we also saw a cute and lovely spotted owlet pair in the sanctuary. On our way back, we saw a new sighting. Have posted that as well, in this blogpost. Do try your luck at finding out the bird species! 😊

But the icing on the cake for today is the very presence of the painted storks!

The painted storks signal the completion of the arrival season it seems!

They are ‘local migrants’ (moving within India rather than flying from Siberia like some ducks), and the painted storks have a centuries-old symbiotic relationship between wildlife and humans.

They have a long-standing tradition of not bursting firecrackers during Diwali (which usually falls in October or November). They do this to ensure the newly arrived birds are not startled or scared away during the critical start of their nesting period.

Also, the bird droppings act as a powerful natural fertiliser for the lake water. Yet another reason why, local farmers and villagers have protected these birds for centuries because the nutrient-rich water from the lake significantly increases their crop yields.

Abdul Jamil Urfi, in his 2024 book on the Painted Storks titled, The Painted Stork: Exploring Ecology and Conservation in India alludes to this Vedanthangal symbiotic connect!

At the same time, he has also highlighted two important areas of concern!

He says -

One of the most important reasons for the decline of many aquatic species of flora and fauna is the disappearance of wetlands, which are regarded as unique repositories of biodiversity and among the most productive ecosystems, crucial for many species of waterbirds. Many urban waterbirds are intimately tied to local wetlands for foraging and breeding.

Added, he has a note of caution on hybridisation of the Painted Stork as a serious conservation threat - particularly between the Painted Stork and the Milky Stork in South-East Asia. This process can lead to the infiltration of alien alleles into native gene pools, potentially leading to ‘hybrid swarms’ and the eventual collapse or extinction of the distinct species,

cautions Urfi.

Bhoomi has introduced the Teach for Nature (TFN) Fellowship, to training individuals to become Nature educators in schools across the country. Key objectives of the TFN

What Does the TFN fellowship involve?

A 3.5-month Residential Orientation Program: Begins on 2nd March, 2026 and ends mid-June, 2026. It is an intensive and immersive learning experience with experienced practitioners.

8-month Work Placement: Upon successful completion of orientation program, selected candidates will be placed in schools to work as Nature Educators from 1st July, 2026 to 28th February, 2027.

Fellows stationed in Bengaluru will receive a stipend of INR 30,000/- month, Outstation Fellows, will have part time engagement only, and are expected to find schools in their regions. They will receive a stipend of INR 15,000/- month.

Weekly Mentoring: Supporting personal growth and enriching learning journey beyond skills.

Continued Impact: After completing the fellowship, you can continue working as a Nature educator in the following years on fulfilling certain criteria.

As part of our birding trek quite early into the morning - off the banks of the River Cauvery - into wilder landscapes deep into the dense forests of Karnataka, we were all so delighted to spot a pair of the Indian Scops Owl, - so beautifully sleeping – albeit camouflaged – ensconced in one of the unreachably high branches of the majestic Arjuna tree!

Yes, its plumage pattern is designed in such a way that enables it to disappear against tree trunks.

And well, the first thing that intrigued me was the meaning of the word ‘Scops’ 😊

Looking up the etymology, I was in for a surprise!

The name ‘Scops’ comes from the Ancient Greek word skops which was used specifically to describe a ‘small-horned owl’ or a ‘little-eared owl.’

In the context of the Scops Owl, the word ‘scops’ comes from the Ancient Greek to specifically describe a ‘small horned owl’ or a ‘little eared owl.’

My ready-resort this time was the lovely field guide titled, Owls of the World by Claus Konig and Friedhelm Weick, published in the year 2008.

The book contains 520 plus pages of such solid information on almost all the owl species across the world. I was surprised to know that, there are more than 50 species of ‘Scops Owl’ across the world, with local prenominals tagging to their names.

Konig and Weick explain the rationale for this book on Owls in their Introduction to the book, which looks quite informative. Hence reproducing a small chunk from the Introduction for us all -

Owls are fascinating birds. Most species spend the day hidden in the dense foliage of trees, in holes or in the dusky attics of large buildings.

Normally humans, as diurnal beings, are only conscious of their presence from their vocalisations.

Because of their nocturnal habits, owls have been regarded by superstitious people as birds of ill omen, although the Greeks considered them wise.

The Little Owl Athene noctua, abundant in the Mediterranean, was given its generic name Athene because of its association with the Greek goddess of wisdom, Pallas Athene, the patron deity of Athens.

An increasing number of ornithologists (amateur and professional) go out at dusk or before dawn in order to study owls in the wild. Groups of owl enthusiasts in many countries exchange the results of their investigations and international meetings of owl specialists are no longer rare.

Many bird books are published every year but owls are treated cursorily in most of them. Books devoted to the order are rare and none of them deals with all the species. This demonstrates a lack of information on owl taxonomy and stresses the fact that it is still very difficult to identify several species correctly,

and hence this book, they opine!

The Indian Scops Owl has dark brown eyes. It gives more yelping, unmelodious notes with upward inflection, such as wuatt or what?

IDENTIFICATION: A medium-sized (20–22cm) sandybrown or buffish-brown owl, spotted and mottled dark brown and black, with rounded wings and large conspicuous ear-tufts. Facial disc prominently bordered blackish.

DISTRIBUTION: S Pakistan, possibly SE Iran (old record from Oman doubtful), NW Himalayas, India east to W Bengal, including Himalayas from Kashmir east to C Nepal, and south to Sri Lanka.

MOVEMENTS: In general resident, possibly partly migratory.

HABITAT: Forest and secondary woodland, desert vegetation, and groups of densely foliaged trees in gardens, mango orchards and other fruit trees around villages and cultivation. From lowlands to 2200 m.

HABITS: Strictly nocturnal. Rarely seen during daytime, when it hides up in thickly foliaged trees.

FOOD: Mainly insects, including beetles and grasshoppers among others, but occasionally vertebrates such as lizards, mice and small birds.

BREEDING: Nests in cavities in trees, usually at moderate height. Eggs 3–4, white and roundish:

STATUS AND CONSERVATION: Widespread, and locally common.
