'Being a literature student has helped me a lot in understanding the milieu, the characters, & the world in which I want my characters to be in...'

Rendezvous with Vetrimaaran

@ QMC | A Report

If you are a passionate student of literature, there’s a great sense of liberation you feel, that doesn’t come from any other discipline.

- Ace Director Vetrimaaran, today

On Zoom, today
Welcome to the place where the sky meets the sea; where the past is woven into the present;

where gazing from corridors and balconies we conjure new destinies and seek new horizons;

where generations of young women have been transformed from fledglings to high flyers;

and though our meeting today is in cyberspace, Queen Mary’s is the place we celebrate!

Welcome to the college by the sea; welcome to Queen Mary’s!

greeted Dr. Preethi Srinivasan, Head, Department of English, Queen Mary’s College, Chennai, in her warm welcome note to the Inauguration of the Various Literary Clubs of the Department of English, Queen Mary’s College, on Zoom Platform this morning at 9.30 am.

On ace Director Mr Vetrimaaran, she said,

Mr Vetrimaaran defies all cliches with his brilliance.

There’s a saying, ‘Reach for the stars, you might gather some stardust through the effort’.

The motive behind approaching Vetrimaaran Sir to flag off this event is because, he is a man with a message.

He has a social vision as is obvious in his productions.

He embodies the spirit of creativity which is rendered dynamic, by being a well-read person.

Our youth today are in need of such role models.

Speaking on the occasion, the Principal had warm words of appreciation for Mr. Vetrimaaran for his films, especially his film, Visaaranai, which tells us the story of innocent migrants tortured by police, to extract a false confession for a robbery.

The Principal added to say -

His genius lies in shining the light on people we would not have glanced in our rat race. Ordinary people lead extraordinary lives, if only we stop and talk to them!

The way he shapes his characters, and writes them, we feel that they are not individual people at all! We get a sense of where they come from, where they belong, etc.

The efforts he has made to extract this nativity and their roots to bring out their reality to us is amazing!

She also appreciated Dr. Preethi, saying,

Ma’am, you have really again proved your mettle as a reliable team player.

Prof. Vinitha Francis, the Master of Ceremonies, introducing the various clubs, said,

Today, we are at the threshold of inaugurating six clubs, namely,

the Research Club,

Film and Visual Media Club,

Western Music Club,

Reader’s Planet Club,

Eco Lit Club, &

Visual Arts and Creative Writing Club.

These clubs have been formed, by bearing in mind the three Ps, namely, Pleasure, Progress and Purpose, she noted.

The students gave splendid performances, with a lovely tribute video welcoming Mr. Vetrimaaran, Renowned Film Director.

Director Vetrimaaran

Congratulating the organisers of this event, Mr. Vetrimaaran said,

These Clubs will definitely influence the way the students of literature look at life.

When I was studying literature, some of my friends were into the Professional courses.

You see, there’s always a divide and difference between parents, when they feel, ‘My son is doing only literature, while their kids are doing other professional stuff, to ensure that they get jobs for themselves!'

I used to tell my parents, well, yes, they have their professions to lead a life, but I guess I can lead a life through literature.

Literature teaches us all to look at life in the right perspective; in short, it puts our perspectives right.

As such, literature is not something that comes right out of one person’s imagination.

Through literature we get to know the past, and predict the future.

The big brother of 1984 is always relevant.

That way we have so much to learn from literature, although it might look all fictional.

It gives voice to people of one particular period, who throw light on the lives and the generations to come in the future.

Being a literature student has helped me a lot in understanding the milieu, the characters, the world into which I want my characters to be in, etc.

And this approach towards life and to my films, has been made possible for me, only through the lovely education I got from literature.

Hence I attribute a lot to my college as well, and to all my professors, who taught me and gave me the confidence to be who I am today!

Well, I personally feel that, there’s also yet another, very important aspect of literature –

If you are a passionate student of literature, there’s a great sense of liberation you feel, that doesn’t come from any other discipline. This is my personal understanding!

That’s something I’ve always felt and experienced. A sense of liberation and a sense of belonging, where you are not bound by any dogmas, and you feel you have the freedom to interpret things the way you want!

You might not get through with certain academic numbers on your Papers, but the liberty to explore and express yourself in an original way is more freely available to students of literature especially, since we are provided with the space for that.

This initiative is a very special one. Especially bringing reggae into contemporary literature is a very innovative attempt! It gives more relevance to the people and society from where we come, and try to make some amount of contribution to make it a better place for the next generation.

Every student who is part of these Clubs, Im sure, will experience the world in a very new way,

signed off ace Director Vetrimaaran!

to be continued...
