11th November 1999
My diary entry for this day, is an exemplar to the energy, the enthusiasm and the excitement of all of us who’d watched this ODI between India and New Zealand on this particular day, LiVE on Doordarshan.
Added reason enough to know how much of an avid cricket buff this blogger had been back then. 😊
Well, it was a real real treat of a memorable match today at Gwalior.
Yes! Up until the 46th over, the batsmen hadn’t in the least shown any evidence of exciting cricket.
However, Saurav Ganguly soon picked up steam, and with able Chennai all-rounder Robin for that much-needed company, he went on to score his ninth hundred at Gwalior against the Kiwis. Saurav hit three huge sixes and 18 fours in the process, scoring 153 n.o!
In the last three overs alone, the duo together added a whopping 55 runs - one of the best in ODI ever!
On an aside, or rather the dismal side, couldn’t imagine Sachin getting just one run in 23 balls, with a dismal strike rate of 4.34!
On the brighter side, Chennai all-rounder Robin too, for his part, regaled the audience with his sensational strikes! He went on to hit three huge sixes and one boundary, amassing 45 runs in just 34 balls, with a strike rate of 132!
This gave India (who’d elected to bat first, after having won the toss) a pretty decent total of 261/5.
In reply, New Zealand could make just 247 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
On the whole, it was a very rewarding day of cricket for the avid cricket buff!
