A Lovely Reading Initiative Worth Emulating! ❤️
Dept of English | Queen Mary’s College (Autonomous), Chennai
A Report
20th January 2026
Today I had the privilege of being part of a lovely reading initiative that’s successfully seen its third edition now!
The Department of English, Queen Mary’s College (Autonomous), Chennai, under their vibrant HoD Dr. Preethi Srinivasan, hosted the third edition of the Avid Readers’ Challenge under the aegis of Readers’ Planet, for their undergraduate students (I & II Years), today in the Golden Jubilee Hall.
I was there on time for the Valedictory Talk and for giving away the prizes. Dr. Uma Maheswari, Principal, Queen Mary’s College, graced the occasion and also gave away the certificates to the winners.
Readers’ Planet – is a forum for fledgling readers drawn from I & II year undergraduate programmes of all majors.
Portions for Readers’ Planet were given a month in advance.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
From Malgudi Days (Five Stories)
The Doctor’s Word
The Gateman’s Gift
Engine Trouble
Iswaran
Father’s Help
Five Audio Stories
Nearly 115 students had registered for the Challenge, and this year, the Department of English bagged the Dorothy Srinivasan Memorial Rolling Trophy.
[In the first edition, the Department of English had bagged the Trophy, while the Department of Zoology had bagged the Trophy in the second edition, last year].
You may want to catch up on last year’s Edition of Readers’ Planet, HERE on our blog.
Thanks to Dr. Preethi, I had a picture snapped next to the bust of the college’s first principal, this afternoon.
