A Real Masterclass in Patience πŸ’š

Of Eagles, Egrets, and those Elusive Dholes

#intothewildwithrufus #birding

Today was an absolutely phenomenal day of sorts for our birding adventures into the wild!

Our first highlight was the absolutely stunning Black-rumped Flameback Woodpecker clinging quite effortlessly to the textured bark of a tree! With its vibrant golden-yellow back and crimson-red crest, it was indeed a lovely sight to behold. On an aside, you can almost hear the rhythmic tapping echoing through the forest when it’s on duty! 😊

Down by the water hole, we were treated to a real masterclass in patience! Well, we spotted a graceful, snow-white Great Egret quietly wading into the shallows and like patience on a monument, was looking out for its prize-catch of the day, nay, the moment! And thank God, I really managed to take a snap of that exact moment when its patience paid off! With a lightning-fast strike it plucked a small fish right out of the water. Patience pays, you see!

We then found a Yellow Wagtail, perched delicately on the wet rocks amidst the flowing stream. Its bright lemon-yellow underparts add a beautiful splash of colour to the entire waterscape. These active little birds are always a joy to watch as they wag their long tails up and down along the water’s edge.

Looking up gently into the branches, we locked eyes with a trueblue predator of sorts! the Crested Serpent Eagle. Perched majestically a thick branch, this raptor looked incredibly stunning to look at! Its piercing, intense yellow eyes give it an aura of absolute authority. It was clearly keeping a sharp watch over its domain, and er…um… its prey as well! 😊

It’s not every day that you get to spot some fabulous mammals as well, on a birding trip!

We were incredibly lucky to spot the Dhole (Indian Wild Dog) trotting through the wild. These elusive predators are a treat to the wildlife enthusiast!

We also caught sight of a beautiful mongoose pausing by its habituated resting spot - a tree trunk - to give us a quick, inquisitive stare before continuing on its way!

Nature never ceases to amaze! If only we have the heart to tune in!
