The Piu-Piu Pied Cuckoo 💚💚💚 Meet the Jacobin Cuckoo 💚💚💚

This photograph of the Jacobin cuckoo is a memorable one for me, as it’s quite rare to snapshot the shy Jacobin Cuckoo that easily!

Also known as the pied cuckoo, the bird has a lot of cultural significance as well.

In many parts of India, the bird is considered the “Harbinger of the Monsoon”, as their arrival perfectly synchronise with the onset of the southwest monsoon.

They migrate across the Arabian Sea from East Africa, quite literally riding the monsoon winds. When they arrive in late May or early June, their loud, metallic “piu-piu” calls are a clear indication announcing the arrival of the rains.

Interestingly, while the Jacobin Cuckoos in northern India travel all the way from Africa, the population found in southern India and Sri Lanka are resident all through the year.
