Ludic,
a forum for film appreciation,
at 12.30 pm on Tuesday, 04 January 2010,
in the Selaiyur Hall Indoor Theatre,
to be held under the aegis of the English Association, Dept of English, MCC.
Dr.Dwight Atkinson, Purdue University, USA, will inaugurate the forum.
Ludic – A FORUM FOR FILM APPRECIATION
The English Association, Madras Christian College, proposes to launch Ludic, - a forum for film appreciation and critical analysis. Accordingly a film will be screened to students at the Selaiyur hall every fortnight and following the screening a briefing about the film, the special features, adaptations (in case of novels to screen), general tips on reviewing a film will be outlined to the students and they will be encouraged to write reviews on the films that will be screened.
Nature of the forum:
Apart from the films pertaining to the prescribed texts, films renowned as classics from all over the world and also regional films which have won a critical acclaim will be screened.
Objectives:
The forum concentrates on highlighting three types of critical appreciation namely:
Journalistic appreciation of a film,
Online appreciation of a film,
Academic appreciation of a film.
To help students understand the medium and its nuances.
To cultivate the critical abilities of students helping them to identify those elements which have made the film a ‘classic’.
To aid them in writing reviews on films.
To sensitize the students to various cultures posited in the films from all over the world.
Interactive activities:
Media persons will be invited to talk to students about film appreciation and interpretation. Apart from this, lecture demonstrations, workshops, discussions and short presentations will also be organized.

ReplyDeleteSince the festival is hosted by English association, it would have been much better to explore the scope of using film as a pedagogic tool, esp. in the teaching of English.
