'Once a move is made, it should not be altered...'

Victim Position | A Game of Chess 😇

13 July 1997 ♟️

#memoriesfromdiaries 💕

If you’d remember dear reader, on our past memory post for 05 July 1997, I had mentioned how I got for myself a chess board just the past Saturday.

Not because I was an expert at playing chess – but chiefly because none of us could set foot anywhere outside our rooms due to the heavy ragging that had caught the campus by storm, and was awaiting all of us freshers! (07 July’s post).

So playing chess was such a bolt-from-the-blue relief for all of us, pavapetta junior folks!

On this particular Sunday, hence, we played chess to our heart’s content!

We also had a token bet of Re. 1/- for our first game of the day, that I played with Jack.

Jack won the first game hands down!

Buoyed by his first victory over me, Jack proceeded to increase the betting amount to Rs. 5/- with Murali playing his opponent this time around!

Added, pavapetta me was ‘nominated’ the umpire of this keenly contested match! 😋

While Jack won the first game, Murali won the second!

Uneasy lies the head that wears the umpire’s cap, you see! 🙃

That’s because, at times, the umpire had a tough call to make, especially when Murali made some crucial moves, but soon backtracked on them! This provoked Jack much-o-much, prompting him to yell out,

Once a move is made, it should not be altered!

Now, lets move on to the red-letter event of the day!

Today, for the very first time, our Wardens swung into action, to the rescue of all of us freshers, and called for an identification parade! (And well, that was because three of the freshers had already obtained their TC [not being able to put up with the ragging] with many more in tow!)

Hence, this was that long-awaited shot-in-the-arm moment for all of us freshers, sulking for long at being browbeaten by our bully-boy seniors! 😍

The Wardens asked us all to gather for a hush-hush, behind-the-doors meeting, where they expressed their solidarity with us, and then proceeded to show us the file photos of all our second years and third years who ragged us all these days!

Coming back to Chess - ♟️

Played chess with Arun in the night, and won, ending the day on a personal positive high for pavapetta me! 😍
